Death Notice

Ferguson, Gary Gilbert - peacefully at his residence on Sunday, December 4, 2011, age 70. Dr. Gary Gilbert Ferguson (B.A., M.D., Ph.D., FRCSC, FACS) is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years Mary Elizabeth Ferguson (nee Kirkpatrick). Dear father of Stephen and his wife Kathryn of London, Heather Ferguson and her husband Stephane Elibani of Gatineau, Quebec, and Sarah Ferguson and her husband Paul McCracken of Toronto. Loving grandfather of Alexander Chaboud, Benjamin Chaboud, Laura Ferguson, Anna McCracken, Marc Ferguson, Katie McCracken and Juliana Ferguson. Gary was born on August 30th, 1941 to Stephen Clement Ferguson and Bethel (nee Summers) in London, Ontario. He was raised in London and attended Ryerson Public School and London Central Secondary School. He received his Medical Degree in 1965 (cum laude) and his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics in 1970 from the University of Western Ontario. He retired from Western as a Professor of Neurosurgery and Medical Biophysics having served as the Chief of Neurosurgery at University Hospital and was one of only eight Canadian neurosurgeons cited by the publication Best Doctors of America. Gary is internationally recognized as a leader on research in stroke prevention surgery. He contributed scientifically to the Robarts Research Institute from its inception in 1986, and served as the Chair of the Robarts Council. Gary will be remembered for his love of family, medicine, golf and travel. The Ferguson family extends its sincere thanks to all of the members of Gary's palliative care team. Visitation on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond, London. A celebration of Gary's life will be conducted at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 280 St. James Street at Wellington, London on Saturday, December 10 at 10:30 a.m.
