Death Notice

BOYD, John Alvin - At University Hospital on Saturday, December 31, 2011, J. Alvin Boyd in his 87th year. Beloved husband of Ruth (Betzner) for 52 years, dear dad of Susan and her husband Greg Hall of Red Deer, AB, Jennifer Boyd of Toronto and Mona and her husband Andrew Garde of Oakville, and loving grandad of Blake, Brent and Corry Hall and Hazel and Manon Garde. Predeceased by his parents John and Hazel (Stanger) Boyd of Peterborough. Al had a 37 year career teaching French and Spanish, beginning in Kitchener-Waterloo. He came to London when Althouse College of Education opened in 1965 and retired in 1985 as a Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Education, UWO. He was a Past Associate Chair of UWO's Senior Alumni Program, a Past President and Life Member of the Ontario Modern Language Teachers' Association, a Past and Honorary Chairman of the London Branch of the Monarchist League of Canada, and a longtime loyal and active member of Metropolitan United Church. He was the recipient of a 2002 Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, a Canadian Royal Heritage Trust Award and an Ontario Volunteer Service Award. Al loved travelling and presenting travelogues, writing the Boyd family history, keeping a diary since retirement, collecting 100 year old postcards and spending long holidays at the family cottage on the shores of Lake Huron in Port Elgin.
