Jack Stephens

Death Notice

Stephens, Jack - Peacefully at Victoria Hospital, London on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in his 97th year. Jack was a resident of London since 1974. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta but spent most of his life in Ontario. His parents were Ira and Effie Stephens of Midland and are now deceased. Jack was the oldest of four boys, Edward, Bruce and Ralph, all deceased. Jack married Janie (nee Pitcher) of Vancouver in 1940. After 64 and a half years of a happy marriage she passed away in 2005, and her ashes are in the Memorial Garden at our church, St. James Westminster in London. Jack was dear father of the late Catherine, John and his late wife Helen of Kanata, Ontario. Loving grandfather of Michael and his wife Kristin of Georgia and Sara and her husband Nathan of Dawson City, Yukon. Jack was a long term career member of the RCAF from 1937-1963. Initially as a ground crew then transferred to aircrew in 1941 as a pilot. He did considerable flight instructing before getting his chance overseas where he was assigned to #420 Squadron flying Lancaster bombers. Post war included much more flight instruction plus administrative posts on all three coasts, Halifax-Vancouver and was on the DEW LINE for 1959-60 with separate in between terms at Trenton totalling 12 yrs. His final years were at Montreal in Air Defence Headquarters until his retirement in March, 1963. A second career that endured for 18 yrs. was with Ontario Probation and Parole. Jack served in Chatham and London until March, 1980 when he retired at age 65. Funeral arrangements private. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully acknowledged.
