HARRIS, Anne - peacefully at Mt. Hope LTC on 16 July, 2013, Anne (Annie) Harris, nee Gill SRN QN in her 98th year. Dear Mother of Dr. David John Harris (Ceridwen) London, Ontario Roger Julian Harris (Lesley) Loughton, Essex, UK. Dear Grannie of Aubrey, Sian (Aaron), Owain (Meghynn), Rhys, Miranda (Felix) and Lalage, and Great Grannie of Reuben Mosley and Hayden Down. Widow of Dr. D. W. Theodore Harris of Penarth, Wales (1993). Anne trained at Highgate Hospital, London, and was in the Guard of Honour for King George V and Queen Mary at the opening of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in Hammersmith in 1935. In World War 2 she was a civilian Nursing Sister in Bath EMS Military Hospital. She was a devoted mother to her sons and great support to her husband in his career. In later life she did geriatric domiciliary nursing in South Wales. She was a keen gardener. She grew up in a political household and remained interested in and knowledgeable about UK politics all her life. After the death of her husband she emigrated to Canada in 1995 and made many friends here in London through Newcomers. She resumed the Creative Writing that she had begun in Cardiff. Her essays drew heavily on her nursing experiences in hospital and community work. She was widely read and had met leading English writers of her day. Many thanks to the late Dr. Albert Annen, to Dr. Eric Nicholls and to the devoted staff of Mt. Hope, and Specialized Geriatric Services. Cremation private. Reception for friends at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, on Saturday, July 20 from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation, 801 Commissioners Rd. E., London, ON N6C 5J2 will be gratefully received.
