Death Notice

Grace Burgess September 26, 1922 - February 7, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grace Burgess, peacefully with family by her side on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Chartwell, London, Ontario in her 92nd year. Predeceased by husband Harold A.E Burgess. Lovingly missed by her children Pamela Mitchell (late John Mitchell), Jill McCrea (Jim), Jane Shafer (Mark) and the late Paul Burgess (Christiana). Proud Nana of Leslie (Joe), Kevin (Maureen), Craig (Sue), Christopher (Danah), Zachary, Ethan, Caelin and Sylvie-Grace. Amazing Great-Nana to Abigail, Avary and Brady. Caring sister of Mildred and Shirley and predeceased by her big brothers Norman, Earl and Doug. Grace was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on September 26, 1922, one of six children born to Ada and Russell McDonald. As a young woman she worked in Base Operations at the Southport Royal Canadian Air Force Base. She met the love of her life, "Hal", a handsome and dashing pilot in the RCAF, at a wartime dance. After a romantic courtship, they married on November 11, 1943. In the following years, Hal and Grace raised four beloved children, and lived in several cities across Canada including Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Peterborough, and finally settling in Kitchener and Houston, Texas. Grace was a dedicated and loving wife, Mother and Grandmother, who absolutely cherished time spent with her family, particularly with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had an exceptional talent for painting and drawing; her artistic gift continuing to flourish well into her late eighties. Grace was a progressive thinker who always remained current and well read on the latest politics and trends, her modern views would often impress her young friends. An incredibly strong, wise and thoughtful woman who provided unconditional love and support at all times, Grace's family has been blessed to have her in their lives. She will be missed dearly. A special thank you to the staff at Richmond Woods, Chartwell, the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex, Home Instead Senior Care, and the Alzheimer Outreach Program at McCormick Home for providing Grace with wonderful care and support. A service for Grace will be held on Saturday, February 15 at 1:30 at Church of St. John the Divine, Arva. A private family interment will be held at Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex and the Alzheimer Outreach Services of McCormick Home would be gratefully acknowledged.
