Pieter van Gaalen
VAN GAALEN, Pieter - Pieter van Gaalen passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2015, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Bea) van Gaalen, children Jochem, Jolien and Pieter, and siblings Joachim, Geerda, Libert, Thijs, Roland and Rolina.
Pieter was born on September 24, 1948, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to parents Jochem van Gaalen and Rolina van Gaalen-Datema. He studied at IVA Driebergen’s automotive school before serving for a year and a half in the Dutch military as a sergeant in the supply and transport division. He then moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, where he worked for nearly four years as a manager at a large gas station and auto repair shop. Subsequently, he worked in the Alberta oil fields as a mechanic. Pieter and Barbara married in 1985 and settled down on a farm in Bryanston, Ontario. They worked together as farmers and greenhouse operators, selling produce and flowers to the public. Pieter was well known for his strawberries and hydroponically grown tomatoes.
Pieter was a loving husband and father, and always put his family first. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. (at Richmond St.). A private service will be held on Wednesday followed by interment at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated.

To The van Gaalen Family: Please know were thinking about all of you at this time. We did not know Pieter personally but we had the privilege of meeting him every time we stopped for tomatoes. Pieter had a wonderful upbeat personality and he will be missed.

My prayers go out to all Peiter's family. I was saddened earlier this week, when I asked how he was doing, to hear "not well". I enjoyed talking with Peiter, whenever I stopped by the green house for tomatoes, or flowers. Pieter had a wonderful spirit. God's Peace and Love.

Dear Jolien and family:
I am so sorry to hear about the death of your father. I did not know him well but from the times we did meet he was such a kind and proud father of each of you.
I pray that you all will find comfort in all the wonderful, happy memories you have made over the years.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

We are so sorry to hear of Pieter's passing. We will keep you in our prayers at this difficult time. He was so proud of his children and when I would stop in he would always give me the run down on what you are doing. He always had time to talk and always had a big smile. He touched so many people.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of your husband and father of your children.
Piet was a dear cousin of mine. Wonderful memories of our youth while living in Holland.
He was a great and fun cousin to be with on the farm or at his parents house. Piet will be missed.
Wishing you all the best. With our deepest sympathy, Martien and Grant Baros (van Gaalen)
