BLAKE, Eleanor Jane (January 20,1925 - July 17, 2015) - Eleanor Jane (Nelson) Blake of Stratford, Ontario died peacefully in her 91st year in London Ontario, on July 17, 2015. Predeceased by her husband Edmund Alexander Blake in 1985, her mother Margaret (Green) Nelson in 2000, her father Dr. Frederick H. Nelson in 1964, and her brother Dr. James M. Nelson in 2015. Survived by her three sons Jeffrey Alexander of London Ontario, James Frederick and Robert Nelson of Toronto, sister in law Susan Beatty of London, cousins Heather McKillop and Bob Tague and their daughter Eleanor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gordon McKillop of Vancouver, and many other cousins, nieces and nephews across Canada. One of Eleanor's greatest passions was her love of music and singing. She was a member of several choirs and her talent as a soprano soloist was recognized in many competitions. In the 1940's in Stratford and southwestern Ontario she won several awards and a singing scholarship. One of her other great talents was writing as she had a keen interest in the written word. She began her writing career at the Stratford Beacon Herald in advertising and then the London Free Press in the early 1950's. Later, after marrying and raising a family she resumed writing for the London Free Press with her popular column Shopping with Jane in the early 1970's. She coined the name Richmond Row, one of her favourite shopping streets in London, still recognized today. She was an adventurous traveler and loved meeting people. Always interested in others, she loved engaging them in conversation. Her warm and friendly spirit will be missed by many. A heartfelt thanks to all the dedicated and hard working staff on the fourth floor at Marian Villa, and the doctors and nurses on the Eighth Floor at University Hospital. The funeral service will be conducted at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond on Thursday, July 23 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation preceding from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.
