Death Notice

CLELAND, William Lindsay “Bill" - William Lindsay “Bill" Cleland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at University Hospital in London in his 84th year. Bill was born November 6, 1931 and grew up in a happy family home on a farm near Listowel. He attended the Elma Township Public School known as the Britton School and after that Listowel District Secondary School where he developed a reputation as a football player and then he attended Stratford Normal School. He had a varied career as a teacher, an insurance underwriter for The Co-operators and a school bus driver for J & T Murphy Bus Lines. His character and affability made him popular and appreciated everywhere he worked. Bill served with distinction for a remarkable 45 years as an elder at New St. James Presbyterian Church in London, the longest service of any elder in the history of that church. Bill maintained a lifelong interest in sports as a supporter of the London Knights, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays and he was an active sportsman himself as a member of the Huff N’ Puff Seniors Fitness Association since 1990 where he participated in hockey, golf, slo-pitch baseball and modern square dancing. He was a member of the Castle Club, an old time square dancing club. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London since 2002 as the Agriculture Representative, a position which suited him because of his prior background in the Perth County Junior Farmers. He was also a great supporter of the arts attending innumerable orchestra concerts, chamber music concerts, recitals, festivals and plays and was a great companion and support for his loving wife of 55 years.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife, Charlotte, his sons, Gordon and George and all of his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, George and Lillian (Richmond) Cleland, his parents-in-law, John and Verda (Slater) Gibb, and his siblings, Elinor (Ken) Waller, Hugh (Elizabeth) Cleland, Marian (Richard) McNamara and Bruce (Margaret) Cleland.
