Death Notice

DR. JAMES D. BUCKINGHAM

Dr. James Buckingham (1941-2016) died peacefully at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care in London, Ontario on March 25, 2016 surrounded by family. Son of the late Edgar Buckingham and Mildred (Dunlop) Buckingham of Stayner, Ontario. Dear brother of Myrna McDermid of London, Ontario. Loving uncle of Ann McDermid and her husband Gordon MacDonald of London and Douglas McDermid and his wife Michelle Boué of Peterborough. Loving great-uncle of Julia and Andrea McDermid.

Jim was born in Collingwood and grew up on the family farm near Stayner, Ontario. He graduated from Collingwood District Collegiate Institute and then attended Lakeshore Teachers College. After teaching for two years at West Gwillimbury Public School, he entered The University of Guelph and graduated from The Ontario Veterinary College in 1969. He returned to the Collingwood area where he opened his own practice in small and large animal veterinary medicine. Jim loved his work and did it well.

An enthusiastic participant in the Veterinary Externship Program at The Ontario Veterinary College, he derived great satisfaction from mentoring students. Jim joined the Rotary Club of Collingwood in 1978 where he served as Chairperson of the Student Industrial Visits and Information Committee and was also in charge of the Rotary Youth Adventure Program. In 2001, Jim was recognized by The Collingwood Rotary as a Paul Harris Fellow. Jim was an active member of All Saints’ Anglican Church in Collingwood.

In 1999, Jim was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour. A stroke left him with permanent physical disabilities and an inability to communicate verbally. Despite these limitations, Jim’s social graces remained intact and he was always happy to see visitors and receive cards and letters from friends and clients. The family extends its gratitude to Dr. Stephen Lownie, Deborah Bisnaire, the physicians, nurses, and staff in Clinical Neurological Sciences at University Hospital who consistently provided outstanding care for Jim over the past 17 years. We would like to thank Parkwood Hospital and Mount Hope Centre for their compassion and professionalism. The family is also grateful for the ongoing support from John and Grail Farrell, Emmy MacLachlan, and Rod Moore.
