RICE, Bill (William Henry) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Rice, 86, a husband, father, grandfather, and flyer extraordinaire. Bill was married to Mary, the love of his life, for 58 years. Born to the late John and Laura Rice, and beloved brother to Doris and the late Johnny. His great pride was his family. Bill and Mary raised seven children, Anne Marie Brode (husband Kerry and children Shannon and Ted), Rose Mitchell-Davies ( partner Doug McConkey and children Ryan and Liz), Maureen, Bernie (wife Tracy and children Danielle and Jacob), Phil, Vince, and Loretta (children Dylan and Claire). Extended family Peter and Charlene Mitchell. Nine great grandchildren are also in the mix. Bill's love of flying started as a toddler when he rode on his mother's lap in an open-cockpit biplane. He would go on to build countless gliders and planes throughout his life. Bill worked as a barber and taught hairdressing at Fanshawe College and Sir George Ross Secondary School in London, ON. He would trade a year's worth of haircuts for a box of used aircraft parts. He had his own runway and workshop on the family farm nestled amidst the cornfields. It was building and creating that proved his most satisfying. Bill was a fighter - battling cancer a handful of times and other illnesses over the years. He was a gentleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. To cite a poem that hung in his workshop: Bill has slipped the surly bonds of earth and now dances the skies on laughter-silvered wings (High Flight). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at St. Michael's Church (511 Cheapside St., London, ON) on Saturday August 6th at 9:30 a.m. until the Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Harris Funeral Home (519)433-7253. In kindness, memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
