Death Notice

Ruth MacAulay Stewart, nee Barnett

Died Oct. 12, 2016 in London, Ontario. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Walt, of 66 years, and by her dear son Doug (Nancy), brothers Tom and Victor and sister Doreen. Brother Henry (Barney) died a week after Ruth. Survived and will be greatly missed by son Alex and wife Marjy, daughter Jane and husband Tim and adored grandchildren Ben, Ian, Arden, Graham, Courtney, Fraser, Emily and Holly. Also survived by dear friend Mary Lou Palmer, sister Mary, brother Doug, sister-in-law Sally, brother-in-law Peter and many loved nieces and nephews.

Born May 11, 1927, Ruth left an impact on everyone who met her and who all would speak of her amazing ability to make people laugh and see the light side of life - and her impatience with pretense. She made people feel at ease and welcomed in the homes she and Walt made in Toronto, San Juan, Kalamazoo and St. Marys. While living in Puerto Rico, Ruth became fluent in Spanish and became a respected volunteer Spanish literacy teacher. She started her BA in Puerto Rico and completed it with honours in Michigan. After she and Walt returned to Ontario, Ruth volunteered as an ESL teacher, a role she found rewarding and inspiring. Her accomplishments were many, but she valued most her adventures with Walt birdwatching, sharing ideas about books and time with her family and friends. And few could turn down her brownies or chocolate chip cookies
