SHANKS, William Allan (Bill) - It is with deep sadness that the Shanks family announces Bill’s passing on Friday, November 4, 2016. After a brief illness, he died with his family at his side, at the age of 66. Loving husband of Judy. Proud father of Jeff, Tim (Sara), and Kaaren (Matt Scott), all of London. Doting grandpa of Daniella, Tessa and Benjamin. Dear brother of Gavin (Gloria) of Kingston. Brother-in-law of Larry (Judy) Vigna, Lorraine (late Rick) Ryan, Arlene (Bill) Ouimet, and Francine (Steve) Tomas, all of Sault Ste. Marie, and Roseanne (Keith) Ashley of Little Current. Predeceased by his mother Janet Shanks (1968), father Allan (2003), and Louise Shanks (2002). Bill will be remembered fondly by many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as by his close friends, business colleagues, and clients. He began his career as a Chartered Accountant in 1972, and retired in January, 2016 as a partner with BDO Canada LLP. Bill was an avid golfer and lifelong basketball fan. He had an eclectic taste in music, and spent many hours listening to his ever-growing collection of CDs. His devotion to his family, and special love for his grandchildren were evident to all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff at University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where Bill received such attentive and compassionate care over the last 6 weeks. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond on Thursday, November 10, from 2-4 pm, and 7-9 pm. A private memorial service will be held on Friday, November 11 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Scleroderma Society of Canada, or the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

I was so sorry to read of Bill's passing. I remember his wry sense of humour and your stories of the funny things he'd do around the house just to bug you. We looked forward to hearing the "Bill" stories Monday mornings in the quad at Lord Elgin Public School.
May those happy memories sustain and strengthen you in the days to come.

I was saddened to read of Bills passing. Although years have passed I will never forget the numerous time Bill kept me out of trouble. I always loved his dry sense of humor. Bill was a special man and will be missed.

Judy, Jeff, Tim , Karen and families, I was deeply saddened to learn of Bills passing...shocking to say the least. My family and I would like to express our most heartfelt sympathies.
Having only know Bill for a short time, I quickly learned he was a caring and dedicated husband, father and grandfather as he always made mention of each and every one of you. The memories of the laughs we shared on the golf course will never be forgotten...and I'll always have a special place for the manor and generosity in which he could keep me quite on the golf course....RIP Bill.
Regards, Tom Allen

I was very sorry to learn of Bill's passing. It has been many years since I've spoken with Bill: he was the CA who helped me keep my sanity! In business, his knowledge, attention to detail and work ethic were only surpassed by his kindness and his compassionate spirit. My sincere condolences to Bill's family.

It is with heartfelt sadness that the Ilderton Lions acknowledge the passing of Lion Bill Shanks. Bill has only been a Lion a short time but was quick to help with bingo, wing night and especially his role on the Medway athletic enhancement project.

I was very sad to hear of Bill's passing. Bill was my accounting mentor and teacher during my years working at Southside. His knowledge, patience and willingness to spend time assisting in whatever needed doing will never be forgotten.
I will be thinking of his family during this difficult time.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill. I know he was a wonderful husband, father and grandpa. I have fond memories of him as a neighbour and babysitter when the kids were little. One of my favourite memories was the night Kaaren was born. I was called down to babysit as Judy had gone into labour. After Kaaren was born Bill came home to be with the boys. As I was leaving he said to me with a huge smile on his face " I never imagined when I woke up this morning I would have a daughter." He was so proud of his kids. The Shanks home was always a great place to go and I was always welcomed with open arms. He will be missed but he will always hold a special place in the hearts of many people. Love to you all.

Bill and I met on the basketball court in the 1970's. I enjoyed playing basketball with Bill for many years. Apart from having a great shot and smooth release, Bill had a quiet demeanor along with a sly twinkle in his eye. We would occasionally cross paths over the next 35 years. We chatted briefly last winter at a Lightning game. He was just a nice guy!
