HOWARD Daphne Frances Frederika Howard (Armour), peacefully at home in London Ontario, Tuesday September 9, 2008, at the age of 97 years. Loving wife of the late Maxwell G.C. Howard. Beloved mother of Philip and Derek and mother-in-law of Marilyn and Renata. Sadly missed by her grandchildren Corwin, Alexandra, and Olivia as well as her niece Daphne MacDonald and nephews Jeremy Selwyn and Charles Armour. Predeceased by her parents Rev. Canon Henry Crawford Armour and Georgina Hughes, her brother Roly Armour and sisters Cicely Selwyn, Molly Paul, and Angela Townley. Daphne was born and grew up in Berkeley, Gloucester. Her family home was The Chantry, once home to Dr. Edward Jenner and now a museum to Jenner's discovery of the smallpox vaccine. She married Maxwell in 1942 and lived in London throughout the war. After the war she and Maxwell lived in Paris for several years before coming to Canada in 1952. After raising her family in Montreal, Daphne and Max retired to London, Ontario in 1978. In 2007 Daphne and Max celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. While living in Montreal Daphne had been a member of the IODE. She took up painting and had the opportunity to take evening classes from Group of Seven artist, Arthur Lismer. In London she joined the Gallery Painting Group at what is now Museum London. Daphne spent many happy days sketching and painting the countryside around London with professional and amateur artists. She has left her family with a rich legacy of oils and watercolors. In later years she devoted herself to her garden, adding a pond and interesting new beds on an almost yearly basis. Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond, London on Monday, September 15 at 11:30 a.m. Cremation will be followed by interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
