Alan C. Farmer

Death Notice

FARMER, Alan Carl - The family announces with great sadness the passing of Alan Carl Farmer on December 20, 2008 in his 92nd year. Born in Toronto in 1917, he was the son of the late Ernest J. and Maida Farmer and the brother of the late David E. Farmer and his wife Verna (2004). Alan was predeceased by his beloved wife Marian (Diggins) in 2001, a loss he had felt keenly ever since. They had come to London as newlyweds in 1942, when Alan began his teaching and coaching duties at H. B. Beal Secondary School. He became a vice-principal at Westminster and Clarke Road Secondary Schools and retired as principal of A. B. Lucas Secondary School. Alan was dearly loved by his daughter Frances, his son-in-law Alan W. Read, and his grandson Alexander Read, and by his son Peter and his grandson Nicholas. He was great-grandfather to Emma and Oscar. In Toronto, his loss is mourned by two dear cousins, Alice and Hughes Winfield, along with Hughes' wife Edythe and their children and grandchildren. Alan will be remembered for his integrity and fortitude, his kind and generous heart, his strength and determination, his sense of humour, and his delight in his Muskoka summers. He was a loved and respected educator and a cherished friend. Friends may call on Monday, December 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, where the funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 23 at 2:00 pm by the Reverend Dr. David McKane. Interment to follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Parkinson Society Canada (Southwestern Ontario), 4500 Blakie Road, Unit 117, London, Ontario N6L 1G5 would please Alan, who faithfully continued to support this cause in memory of his dear Marian.
