Joan MacKenzie

Death Notice

Barbara Joan MacKenzie died peacefully at her home in London on Sunday, July 18, 2010. She was 83. Joan was born in Port Huron, Michigan, graduated from Sir Adam Beck Collegiate in London and from the University of Western Ontario in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. At Western she met the love of her life, Donald Alexander MacKenzie, a fellow University of Western Ontario Graduate (Doctor of Medicine 1946). They were married in 1950 and moved to Rochester, Minnesota before moving back to London in 1952 where they spent the rest of their lives. Donald predeceased Joan in February of this year. They were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on March 4th. The daughter of Robert and Olive (Mills) Gardiner, this caring, special lady is survived by her loving sister Marilyn Millman of Grand Bend, her children John (Inger Helene) MacKenzie, Barbara (Bill) Molson, Gordon (Donna) MacKenzie, Kim (Greg) McCabe, Douglas (Patty) MacKenzie; 13 grandchildren John, Christiane, Douglas, William, Brittany, Emma, Taylor, Matthew, Claire, Ben, Alex, Kailey and Madelyn and three nieces Lynne, Christine and Suzanne and a nephew Donald of Michigan. She is predeceased by her brother Jack. Joan will forever be remembered for her love of family. Her greatest joys were family dinners and the roar of laughter around the table. She had a wonderful sense of humour. She loved to spend summers in Muskoka with her family, supporting them in all of their endeavours. She truly adored her loving husband Donald and was extraordinarily proud of her five children. A private family memorial service will be held at the James A. Harris Funeral Home. A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 7-9 at the family home. Interment will be held at Kintore Presbyterian Cemetery in Kintore, Ontario. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, an organization that the MacKenzie's held in the highest regard. Joan's family wishes to thank Dr. Elaine Thurgood for her compassionate care. We are also very grateful to Mary Wellman and all the ladies from Medical Priorities for their compassionate and respectful care for Joan over the past several months. A special thanks to Evette Cruickshank who became a very close and valued friend to Mom.
